Pull Apart Rolls

Pull apart Rolls

Rolls or burger buns, or Hawaiian rolls.

1-2 hours depending on how much time you have!

These can be done super quick, but if you give them longer proofing time they will become fluffier and lighter.

Ingredients

1 cup of warm water (100 degrees)

½ cup of milk of choice (or pineapple juice for hawaiian rolls)

4 Tablespoons of Butter

2 Tablespoons of Sugar (Use brown sugar for hawaiian rolls)

1 Packet of Instant or Active Dry Yeast (or a little under 1 tbsp)

1 tsp of salt

About 3.5 Cups of Flour - Start with 3 cups until the dough is perfect.

Egg for egg wash

Sheet Tray or 9X13 Baking Dish

Parchment Paper

Cooking Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 and line a sheet tray with parchment or a baking dish with baking spray or butter.
  2. Mix the water, sugar and yeast together, whisk and set aside for 5 minutes. Mix this in the bowl of your stand mixer if you have one.
  3. Using the dough hook add in the butter, salt and 3 cups of flour and mix on a low speed. Once everything is combined add ¼ cup more flour at a time. You want it to become a super smooth dough. Be sure to only add a little extra flour at a time. If you don’t have a stand mixer you can mix the dough with a wooden spoon and then hand knead.
  4. Once it comes together, spray it or coat it in a little oil, and cover loosely with plastic wrap and a wet towel on top. Place somewhere warm, ideally until it doubles in size but at least 15 minutes. Once it has rested, punch it down and cut it into 6-12 round pieces depending on what you want. If you want burger buns do 6 and if you want pull apart rolls do 12.
  5. Place them on the prepared sheet tray or baking dish. For pull apart rolls you want them to be close together. For the burger buns you want to flatten them a little into bun shape.
  6. Spray the tops and cover loosely with plastic wrap and wet towels. Set aside for at least 15 minutes or until doubled in size.
  7. Make your egg wash with 1 egg and a splash of water mixing well and then using a pastry brush brush the tops with the egg wash once they have proofed. After egg washing you can sprinkle flaky sea salt on top. Or for burger buns you can do everything seasoning or sesame seeds!
  8. Bake them for 15-22 minutes until the tops are lightly browned and when you tap them you hear a hollow sound.
  9. Brush with more melted butter and enjoy!
